Report on BRC Horse Trials National Championships by Pat Brown - Horse Trials Chef d'équipe

We were represented at the National Horse Trials Championships at Aston le Walls on Saturday and Sunday,7 and 8 August, by Neil Grant and his lovely horse- which really belongs to Mum, Gail - Ragtime Suzie.

Saturday - Neil was a little apprehensive about the long arena for dressage but he went for it and landed an 8 for his entry.  He did a good dressage test 37.5, and had one show jump down - the bogey fence - on the Saturday.  They were all late home on the Saturday night, as there was a briefing for the following day about the roads and track, steeplechase and the cross country course which they had to attend on that evening.

Sunday -  I went with the family on the Sunday and we all had a very good day with Neil and Suzie having a really good time and excellent performance from them both.  There are 4 phases on cross country day.  Phase A - timed roads and tracks.  Phase B - a steeplechase course with 3 fences and two circuits of the track.  Phase C - a second timed roads and tracks.  Phase D -  a Cross Country course.  There is a 10 minute box for vet check and a breather before start of Phase D.

Neil and  Suzie did not get any time faults for Phases A, B and C and Suzie obviously enjoyed the steeplechase part.  They both did an excellent Cross Country round and only had 1.2 time penalties, this gave them a final penalty score of  42.7  which was made up from 37.5 dressage, 4 SJ and 1.2 time for XC and no other penalties for the roads and tracks and steeplechase.  As this was a first  2 Day Event for  Neil, he did an excellent job and Suzie as always was an absolute STAR. We were all very pleased with the results especially Gail who is now wanting her horse back, and Neil saying he wants do another event with Suzie, at the end of day 2, but unfortunately the marks were not good enough to bring a rosette home - apart from a commemorative rosette for competing at the championships.

My feeling at the end of the day was that the XCountry could have been a little more demanding as the placings were following the dressage results with most people getting clear rounds, however a very good performance and our club was well represented with Neil and Suzie and very well done to them both.

Area 16 Horse Trials Qualifier -20 June 2010

Eland Lodge, Ashbourne, Derbyshire

Report by Pat Brown, RRC Horse Trials Chef d'équipe

The day and venue were both superb.  The course for the XC was beautifully built and any difficult fences had an alternative, with prepared surfaces on the take off and landing and altogether I could not fault the course.  The Show Jumping phase was on a surface as was the warm up.  The dressage arenas were well set up and the whole event went very smoothly.

Rutland Riders did not disgrace themselves, the Novice team came 3rd overall, well done to all of them, Gail, Joyce, Bella and Neil, Gail's son.  Neil did extremely well by winning his section, and now they are off to the Championships, Suzie (his horse) was brilliant and she will be well used to the various Championships as she has qualified in other disciplines with different rider!

The Intermediate Team fell apart somewhat as horses became lame before the event, but we did finish up with 2 members that rode as individuals, these were Rachel Finch on Middy, her 2nd horse, as Spider was lame.  Lizzie Lomas came 5th so very well done to her.

We also had Alex Moran-Jones riding as an individual in the Open Class.  She was going extremely well until her horse slipped in the wood and they parted company, both were able to get going again to complete the course.

So, we all had a lovely day, Fiona came with me to help as she so often does, Rosemary and Deirdre were working very hard all day in the Secretary's tent and both, I am sure were glad when it came to a close and all the results were up.

I hope, as I am sure many others do, that Eland Lodge will have us back another year as this was by far the best venue and most efficiently and professionally run area Horse Trials Qualifier we have had for some time.  Thanks to all my team members and I hope you all enjoyed the day.

Top Results for Rutland Riding Club at Area 16 Dressage Qualifier - 13th June 2010

The Club had a excellent day at the Dressage and Riding Test Qualifier, held at Sheepgate Equestrian Centre on 13 June.

The Riding Test Teams got the day off to a flying start, taking first and third places in the Team competition. Tamsyn Iveson, riding Olympic Du Loir was first, overall, in Riding Test 11, followed by Rosie Bliss on Blackwater Boy in second place; Bella Craven on Frank’s-A- Goodun in fourth place, with Deirdre Haynes on Fernella Fudge in sixth. Pam Sellers and Lucienne were placed second, overall, in Riding Test 13.

The Senior Novice Dressage Teams rode next and the Club, again, took top honours with their Team of Sophie Russell on Dun and Dusted; Rosie Bliss on Blackwater Boy; Fiona Edmunds on Ragtime Suzie and Gail Yeandle on Yume No Shakara.  Rosie and Fiona were both placed third, individually, and Sophie was sixth. The other Novice Team of Sue Scott on Red Cliff 11; Pippa Owens on Cameo; Bella Craven on Frank’s-A-Goodun and Rosemary David on her super new horse, Royal Mail, were seventh.

With sixteen Tests completed, the afternoon saw the Senior Open Dressage and Dressage to Music competitions get underway. Rutland Ranksborough ended up in eighth palace, with Tamsyn Iveson and Olympic Du Loir taking third in Elementary 45.  The other Open Team was ninth, with Deirdre Haynes and Fernella Fudge taking fifth place in Novice 28 and Tamsyn Iveson, and an excitable No Pips, taking sixth in Novice 30.

The final classes of the day were the Dressage to Music and Pam Sellers and Lucienne rode a lovely, smooth and rhythmical Test to gain second place in the Novice with Points section. I think that we all thought that Pam should have won!

Everyone enjoyed the day, which was well organised and ran to time. The scores and results went up, quickly, which always makes such a difference.  We are all now looking forward to the Championships at Lincoln on 12 September, when the Riding Test and Novice Dressage Teams will compete, hopefully, with some of our highly placed individuals, who were not in winning Teams

Best wishes,

Jane Ellis - Dressage Chef d'équipe

Fantastic Results at The British Riding Clubs’ NAF Winter Dressage Championships

Having won at the Area 16 Qualifier back in January, our Team of Tamsyn Iveson and No Pips; Sue Scott and Red Cliff 11; Alison Pepper and Grouse and Bella Craven and Frank’s- A-Goodun, made the long trip to Hartpury near Gloucester for the Winter Dressage Championships. The Team went brilliantly and finished in 6th place, with 19 Teams competing on the day.

Tamsyn and Harry were second in the HI2 arena on a score of 70.52%. This was a superb result, as Tamsyn had to contend with appalling weather conditions, in the form of very heavy, cold rain, and it was not easy keeping a young horse attentive and settled, to show some lovely work.

Sue and Roo were 8th in the HI2 arena on 65.78%. Roo produced a rhythmic and balanced HI2 Test and they only slipped down the order later on in the day, having ridden early in the morning.

Bella was delighted with Frank’s Novice 25 and a smooth, balanced Test resulted in 64.8%. Ali and Grouse also rode Novice 25 and showed some good work. Sadly, Grouse was quite harshly penalised for some tensions and finished on 59.2%. The Novice 25 marks were extremely close, with the decimal points separating the individual placings.

As always, the Rutland Team looked immaculate and did the Club proud and everyone now looking forwards to the Summer Championships!

Update from Pat Brown about her Grandson Toby Cunliffe

June 24th 2010

Toby had another MRI scan at the beginning of June and Louise was informed by Professor Grundy, on Friday of last week, that the scan was clear and also some scar tissue had gone.  This was marvellous news for us all and again many thanks to the Club and Committee for your continued support.

Jump Cross training took place for members on 13th March at Grange Farm, Wittering.  We were blessed with nice weather for a change and Peter Hales, our instructor, trained 10 members divided into 3 groups over the course concentrating on rhythm and pace.  There was lots of opportunity  to splash through the lagoons and streams as well as the dreaded ditch and the joker fence.  As well as jumping the members had to ride a certain route over undulating terrain and then guess how long it took in the number of minutes : seconds....  There were some interesting answers.

At the end of the sessions there were some members who requested that we run another Jump Cross training session quite soon.  Please, would those who took part contact Pam Sellers.  Any other members who would be interested also do the same and Pam will do her best to organise one.  Please, if possible email, pam.sellers@btopenworld.com
